Packing Goes High Tech, LA Style

Once again, I find myself at my desk in my underwear writing another review for The Great Packing Harness Roundup. Today’s installment covers Andrew Christian’s Shock Jock enhancing underwear, or more specifically the Shock Jock Flirt Boxer.

Andrew Christian Shock Jock Flirt Boxer

Shock Jocks are designer underwear that include an inside pocket along with an “Active Shaping Technology” foam cup insert for bulge enhancement. These Los Angeles-made underwear come in different cotton/spandex blends, in a variety of color combos, and feature an extra wide silver waistband. They fit small and are best suited to athletic body types.

The cup has male detailing in the form of a subtle cock outline and it looks very natural in your pants. Some trans guys will find the cup alone completely satisfactory for packing. However, without much behind the cup, it will depress with close body contact. (This doesn’t bother me at all and I usually don’t pack when I wear my Shock Jocks.) To get around this, you could stuff something like a sock behind the cup, or remove the cup altogether and slip a small to medium sized packer in instead. These underwear have a snug fit so they’ll keep your packer secure even though the pocket has an open side. Also, don’t dust your packer with anything—the natural tackiness of it will help keep it in place in the Shock Jock pocket.

Shock Jocks are no-fly undies and are therefore unsuitable for use with STP devices.

Shock Jock underwear are super comfortable and very well made. They’re more expensive than the other products reviewed for The Great Packing Harness Roundup ($25 – $43 USD) but they’re not an investment I regret: I count them among the most comfortable underwear I own (along with TranZwear packing underwear) and I expect that they’ll have a long shelf life given the quality.

While AC’s Active Shaping Technology was likely not designed with transgender men in mind, Shock Jocks are nonetheless an excellent strap-free option for packing.

For my review, I tested out three different pairs of TranZwear packing underwear:

These are super comfortable, made in India, 95% cotton, Hanes underwear. The Floater pouch is very soft, and both its construction and the stitching affixing it to the waistband looks professional and durable. These deliver the goods with a great fit and worry-free packing at an affordable price.

I tend to pack small and I noticed that my packer shifted to its side inside the Floater pouch pretty easily, requiring some manual adjustment throughout the day. A smaller pouch would remedy this. Because TranZwear products are truly custom, those who pack small can request a smaller pouch when placing an order.

2. Athletic Trunk with Snuggler

These Jockey brand sport trunks are made in Costa Rica with a polyester/spandex blend. The material is moisture resistant making these trunks ideal for sports and active lifestyles. The Snuggler pouch design limits packer mobility. In the tradition of TranZwear, this model offers extreme comfort and secure packing.

I still experienced some sideways shifting of my small packer within the Snuggler pouch, but less than with the Floater. Again, those who pack small can request a smaller pouch when ordering.

3. Shower Brief with Snuggler

These nylon/spandex bikini briefs are made by Schiesser Aqua, a well-respected brand from Germany. They feature an inner drawstring and zippered pocket, plus a mesh pouch inside to hold your packer. The open-sided pouch design allows you to pack right or left. The TranZwear shower brief is designed for use in gym locker rooms, showers and pools, and is well-suited to this as long as you’re comfortable with a more exposed style.

My tests suggest that packing down with this model may not be ideal, depending on your packer, and body size and shape. Packing down, I noticed gaps between the brief and my body, near the packer, providing some limited view from the side of my private region. I was able to almost eradicate the problem with some junk adjustment, but not enough to make me feel secure enough to strut across a locker room. Without a doubt, the shower brief is a more exposed style than the other models tested, and I’d say they require a host who’s already quite comfortable in near-nude male spaces. They’re very comfortable though, and do their job of holding your packer well. The sporty material suggests that they’d be a good option for active guys looking for a more revealing underwear style.

Conclusions

As a first time user, I’m impressed with the general concept of packing underwear, and TranZwear executes their products extremely well. While I experienced some packer shifting during my testing, I didn’t once feel like I’d accidentally lose my packer, and I loved being to just drop in my packer and go with limited fuss. TranZwear products truly live up to the brand promise of “packing with confidence.”

New, Exclusive Design Puts Comfort, Function and Fun First

For Part 3 of The Great Packing Harness Roundup, I’m pleased to present a review of a brand new entry in the world of packing harnesses, the Tool Belt, available exclusively from Tool Shed Toys. This product is so new in fact that it’s not yet in mass production, so you’re getting an early look here at this fresh and unique design concept.

At first glance, the Tool Belt appears to be another jock-style packing harness, with leg straps providing extra security by keeping your junk in place, but the similarity to other harnesses of this nature ends there. First off, the Tool Belt is comfortable, and I mean really comfortable. I’ve worn guys’ underwear since I was a young child, so I admit that I raised an eyebrow at the more feminine-looking leg strap elastic, but I have to say that these straps are a big reason why this harness is so comfy. One of the comfort tests that I put packers and harnesses through is a 1-hour hike and the Tool Belt passed with flying colors. I barely notice I’m wearing it. Plus, the leg straps are… adjustable! Harnesses are typically sold by waist size alone, failing to take into account different body sizes and shapes. The leg straps on the Tool Belt are sewed in a loop around the waist band, allowing them to be easily adjusted for an optimal fit.

As one of the only harnesses that’s STP compatible, the Tool Belt also scores big points for functionality. As you can see in the photo at left, there’s a specially designed opening in the back of the “cage” to allow for a STP receptacle to pass through it. This thoughtful design should please the “snow writers” out there.

The Tool Belt currently comes in two color configurations: Purple Camo and the Packer-Backer. I love the bright green and yellow of the Packer-Backer—I feel like I’m suiting up to play for the ’74 Athletics when I put it on. (The harness colors are a tribute to the Packers football team, but I’m a baseball man. No disrespect intended, Packers fans!) It’s a subtle bonus, but the fun factor takes some of the sting off my disappointment at having to pack in the first place, and makes the Tool Belt feel like just another piece of clothing—instead of “transition wear.”

Putting a packer in the Tool Belt is a little like fitting a dog into a sweater, so I recommend doing this before putting the harness on. Developed in collaboration with a professional Lingerieist and Corsetier, the stitching and construction of the Tool Belt are sturdy, but it’s always wise to be gentle to avoid accidental tears and to keep your harness lasting longer.

The Tool Belt’s ball cage has a low hang, which facilitates STPing. However, my testing suggests the problem of balls wedging between legs could be an issue for guys who wear loose boxers. The problem is mitigated by tighty whities and more form fitting boxer briefs and trunks, all of which should provide just the right lift to keep your balls out in front.

The Tool Belt comes in four sizes: Small fits waist sizes 28-31 inches, medium fits 32-35 inches, large fits 36-39 inches, XL fits 40-43 inches.

Currently in a limited edition run with larger quantities on the way, retail pricing for the Tool Belt was not available at press time.

Will the Real Mister Right Please Come Forward?

For Part 2 of The Great Packing Harness Roundup, I compared two products made by Toronto, Canada’s ASLAN Leather. ASLAN products are made with high quality, handpicked leather, with strict attention to detail, and come with a lifetime guarantee.

Mister Right Packing Strap

Now available in both black and white, the simple leather backed design of the Mister Right Packing Strap has a 1 1½” elastic waist band sits on your hips and wears discreetly under clothing. This harness is quite comfortable (due to the single strap), expertly crafted, and affordable at just $17. I feel much more secure wearing this over the Full Monty harness, and for less than $10 more than the Full Monty, the Mister Right Packing Strap is a definite upgrade.

The Mister Right Packing Strap was created as a companion for the Mr. Right packer made by Vixen Creations, so not surprisingly they pair up nicely. In fact, with its large ball support “cage”, this harness doesn’t work very well with the other packers I tested with. For example, you can drop a Mr. Limpy in, but with its smaller balls that don’t quite fill the cage you’ll eventually notice some wear and tear on the underside of the shaft due to friction with the cage straps. With the Mister Right then, you also need to be wearing Mr. Big.

Despite the comfort, quality and affordability, the Mister Right Packing Strap has its downsides. For example, I’ve (inconsistently) noted some friction and irritation from the leather against my dick. This surprised me because the leather is very soft, so it may have more to do with cock hypersensitivity (due to testosterone) than the harness itself. This harness also isn’t STP-friendly, and it has a tendency to ride up your waist a bit. A belt will help with this though, and note that all guys–trans or cis–have to adjust their junk sometimes.

Mister Right Packing Strap – Jock Style

The Jock Style version of the Mister Right Packing Strap provides extra security with two added leg straps that completely eliminate the migration problem that the original design has. Unfortunately, the leg straps just don’t fit my body well. I don’t know if it’s because of their length or the angle they’re sewn into the waistband with, but where they pass between my legs they feel like a guillotine around my cock! Not comfortable. Perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised though: a founding principle at ASLAN is to create gear for women’s bodies. I may have been born female bodied, but my body shape was never particularly female and has also changed through HRT, and the Jock Style harness doesn’t seem to account for the position and/or size of my dick. However, every body is different so as they say, your mileage may vary.

The Jock Style Mister Right Packing Strap is made with the same attention to detail and quality as the original, and clocks in at a reasonable $23.

The Choice for DIY Enthusiasts

The Full Monty Packing Harness is a common design that you’ll find out there in a few variations. It’s inexpensive and easy to make if you have some basic sewing skills, plus there are a few vendors who sell ready-made versions of this popular harness style.

To make a Full Monty Packing Harness, follow these simple instructions. For supplies, all you’ll need are some lengths of 1/2″ and 1/4″ elastic, and sewing thread, both of which you can find at a fabric store for less than $10.

A couple of years back, I bought a Full Monty-style harness for $15 USD from the now defunct, FTM Solutions. The harness is comfortable enough, though I find that the leg straps sometimes get twisty, leaving me aware that I’m “strapped.” I like that I can feel the packer next to my skin with this harness, and that it feels well secured. After minimal use though, I noticed that the stitching connecting the waistband together was coming loose, which made me nervous for fear of it coming apart and causing an embarrassing situation. So, if you’re making one of these for yourself make sure your stitching is pretty heavy duty.

Also, a warning for those who don’t STP: be careful when you drop your drawers that you don’t also pull down the harness. In other words, whiz with the harness in place because if you accidentally pull the harness down too, you’re likely to lose your packer to the floor. Uh oh!

This harness style works particularly well with the lightweight Mr. Limpy packer, while other packers are just too heavy for the design. Mr. Limpy will stick straight out when you put it in the harness, but your pants should squish the soft elastic polymer down so your package appears less, ahem, excited.

Whether you’re taking the DIY route or buying a pre-fab version, the Full Monty Packing Harness is an inexpensive solution that works well, especially when paired with the affordable Mr. Limpy packer. Together, these make very decent packing package that’s also STP-friendly.

Where to Buy

With FTM Solutions now gone, I’m not aware of a vendor selling the original Full Monty design, but there are a few variations available out there:

• Motivational Transguy, aka JustAdamFTM on YouTube, is a guy from Canada who sells a Full Monty style harness for just $5.50 CAD. See his website for details.
• The Stand-To-Urimate Packer Holder is a similar design but without leg straps, which might mean this harness could ride up a little. At just $4.99 from Urimate.com, it’s worth a try!
• The Bunn-G is a cock ring/thong for non-trans guys that looks like it could work equally well for packing trans guys.
• DIY buffs looking to create the Next Big Thing in packing, might also want to look at this design for inspiration, International Jock’s Bulge Booster.
• The February 2009 edition of the FTM Australia newsletter, Torque, suggests another low-budget harness design using a stocking that holds the packer and ties into modified briefs. No sewing required, and supplies can be “obtained” from your mother’s dresser drawers!

For many transgender men, being able to stand to pee (STP) is an important rite of passage that can help relieve some of the emotional and physical dysphoria of being trans. Adopting this socialized male behavior can be liberating and make one feel more whole and complete.

Of course it’s certainly acceptable to opt for a stall instead of the urinal, and lots of cis gender men sit to pee, especially at home. However, they have the option of whipping it out at a urinal when the need arises. The simple fact is that not all men’s rooms have a suitable stall. You’ll often find it in a sorry state of disrepair, with the door precariously hanging off a single hinge, or worse, no door at all. This can be extremely distressing for the trans man who doesn’t STP.

Thankfully, there’s a wide range of products that trans men can use to STP. These range from do-it-yourself solutions that cost nothing to more elaborate pack ‘n’ pee prosthetics. This is a fairly individualized art and learning to STP usually requires a little training at home and sometimes trying out several products before you find one that gets the job done.

There are a few downsides to trans male STPing, such as the expense of buying STP devices, jockstraps, sock jocks, suspensories and other harnesses, having to keep your STP device clean and preventing urinary tract infections, and for some, switching to briefs. Also, depending on physiology, skill and focus, STPing can be unhygienic. Don’t believe it? Just ask the Mothers Against Peeing Standing Up whose mandate is to “prevent unnecessary urine stream fragmentation.”

So, why do men STP anyway?

Well, squatting in a urinal would surely get some looks.

There’s a Baptist Pastor who claims that men in the Bible are specifically identified as people “who piss against the wall,” distinguishing them from women. It’s dictated by scripture people: STP is a god-given right!

Even though many cis gender men sit, and the men’s room is not a particularly discriminating venue, there’s a certain segment of society that thinks sitting to pee is effeminate and not what “real men” do. In Standing While You Pee: The Last Bastion of Masculinity? Klaus Schwerma asks,

Is standing-while-peeing an act of masculine identification, a symbolic exercise of power, an exercise of patriarchal power against women, a demonstration of the claims of masculinity and (phallic) male fantasies? Is standing while you pee an expression of masculinity?

Feminists have weighed in on the subject of STP too. Ten years ago, women in Sweden, Germany and Australia pushed to have all urinals removed from public restrooms. This was due in part to concerns about hygiene but “more crucially because a man standing up to urinate is deemed to be triumphing in his masculinity, and by extension, degrading women.” Oy!

Unraveling the ties between STP, masculinity and feminism is outside the scope of this article though, so let’s proceed.

How to STP

Perhaps the first place to start is seeing if you can STP without a device. Nathaniel of transboys.info has preserved a helpful brochure on the subject. Check it out here: How to Pee Standing Up.

Learning to STP with a device takes some practice, and it’s a good idea to master the technique before strutting up to a public urinal. Start by practicing in the shower or while standing in your bathtub. When you’re leak-free and confident, move your training to the toilet. For those who aren’t using an STP packer, think about how you will carry your device, how you will discreetly setup with it, and how you will clean it when you’re done. Be patient. As vlogger and blogger charlesasher explains, learning to STP can be frustrating.

DIY STP Devices

The “Coffee Lid” STP is a free, simple and convenient solution. Simply take a large plastic coffee can lid or equivalent (ie. lids from yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.) and trim the edges off so that you’re left with a flat disk. For smoother edges and more comfort, you can sand the edges with fine grain sandpaper. When you’re ready to use it, roll it into a funnel and simply pee through it. Urine will bead up on the plastic so a vigorous shake will render the disk dry enough to slip it into your back pocket. Free, simple, convenient, though not entirely urinal friendly and perhaps better suited to STPing in a stall.

The Medicine Spoon is a cheap and effective plastic device you can buy at any pharmacy. You’ll find several designs with different sized spoons and tubes and varying plastics, but they all work the same way. You pee into the spoon end. Cut the other end off to provide a hole for the stream. The Medicine Spoon is small enough to fit into your pocket, cheap and is the basis for most STP packer designs, meaning: master the spoon and you’ll master most STP packers.

Commercially Available STP Devices

The Magic Cone is a disposable, biodegradable, waterproof cardboard cone that’s quite portable. 3 for $3.95 or 9 for $11. Note: You can get lower bulk pricing on the Magic Cone when you buy direct from the manufacturer.

The TravelMate is similar to a medicine spoon. This is a reusable, inexpensive and popular STP device that’s often used to make STP packers. Winner in the 2001 Medical Design Excellence Awards competition. $8.95 each or 3 for $23.00.

The GoGirl is an unfortunately named STP that’s very portable and inexpensive. The soft silicone does call for extra care during use to prevent leakage. $12.95 Want a free one? Read on…

The SNEE-KEE is a reusable and portable plastic STP. Skin tones aren’t available yet. $12.95

There are a number of STP devices that work well and are easy to use but aren’t particularly portable. You can carry them in a knapsack, but not in your drawers. As such, they offer limited value to trans men. They’re included here for completeness, and also to help give you ideas about making your own devices.

The Stand to Pee by Home Grown is a medicine spoon with latex tubing that will fit into your packer. It’s not clear on the website but it appears that the packer is not included. Ships from Australia. $30.

The FTM STUD is another STP packer design that comes in two dick sizes, as well as three varying sizes for the spoon. Unlike other similar STP packers, the FTM STUD’s spoon is coated with a special rubber coating for comfort. The FTM STUD uses latex tubing for a softer appearance to your package. $40 – $45. Conclusion

Whether or not one STPs is certainly no measure of the man, but for those who want to, or find themselves in situations where they have little choice, the wide range of STP products available can help solve the logistical problems while also alleviating some of the anxiety that many guys feel around public bathrooms.
